The project
The volunteer project will take place near the river Po in a protected area called "Parco fluviale del Po". Volunteers will assist in cutting bamboo to protect endemic vegetation, cleaning paths and removing weeds. Additionally, they will support a project by Torino University to build "bee hotels" and bring them to summer camps for children, aiming to educate them about the impacts of climate change. In case of rain, indoor work may involve cleaning bell towers and churches. Volunteers will collaborate with local teenage volunteers to create a mural depicting their work during the project.
During the first week, Italian volunteers from the association AU.DI.DO (autonomy for disabled people) may also participate, fostering cultural exchange and exploration of traditions.
Volunteers should be prepared to present something typical of their country (a dance, song, game, dish, or custom) and will visit a retirement home weekly to share their cultures. They will also engage with an association aiding refugees to gain insights into refugee management in Italy. Additionally, volunteers will be hosted for dinner by families in Carignano to experience local culture and lifestyles.
Accommodation & food
Volunteers will be accommodated in a building with bunk beds, communal bathrooms with two showers and hot water, and a kitchen. Rooms will accommodate 4 to 6 beds. Volunteers are responsible for cleaning and cooking, and food will be provided by the host organisation. Volunteers should bring a sleeping bag (or sheets), pillowcase, and towels.
Location & leisure
Carignano, with its population of 8,700, is located on the left bank of the river Po, approximately 20 km from Torino, within the Regional Parco Fluviale. Its center features typical "Piedmontese" architecture, including an ancient core with medieval archways and a baroque cathedral. The surrounding area offers architectural and naturalistic attractions, and Turin is easily accessible by frequent coaches. During free time, volunteers can explore local activities such as the open market and participate in events. Weekend trips to Turin can include visits to museums like the Egyptian Museum, the Cinema Museum, the MAO Museum of Oriental Art, and sites such as the Holy Shroud. Costs for these activities are not covered by the project.
Project host
Lunaria
The project is organised by Lunaria in collaboration with "Giovani Insieme". Established in October 1998 in Carignano, "Giovani Insieme" is composed of young people working to protect, promote, and enhance artistic, historical, and architectural heritage, as well as nature and the environment. They offer summer volunteer projects for young volunteers from across Europe. The Carignano projects aim to restore rooms in the town's historical center, contributing to the preservation of its architectural heritage while fostering international connections among young volunteers. "Giovani Insieme" also hosts local events such as summer camps for children and cultural exhibitions.
By participating in this project, volunteers will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals: Life on Land (SDG 15) and Climate Action (SDG 13).
